"Strapping Tape"

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm a total noob.

The rulebook says "Strapping tape must run the length of the core on at least two sides."

What does this mean exactly? Does Strapping Tape refer to a specific kind of tape? How does a pvc rod have "sides"?

It's tape with reinforcing fibers, which is much more resistant to tearing than duct tape. E.g. https://smile.amazon.com/T-R-U-FIL-795- ... 01FYJKI8U/

You run two strips of tape down the length of the core. They will be parallel, not crossing, so they are on opposite sides of the core. Don't overthink this, the idea is that you have two strips for redundancy, not that they are precisely 180 degrees apart. The purpose is that if the core breaks, the strapping tape will keep the two pieces together so you'll have an obviously broken, floppy weapon rather than a broken pointy shard in your hand and a separate broken pointy shard that has flown off somewhere.

That makes so much sense! Thank you so much!

It is just as JD says.

Generally we recommend using something like this https://www.amazon.com/3M-Scotch-Filame ... Btape&th=1

I think the larger width tapes just make things messier depending on the size of the core you are using.

For note, filament/strapping tape is easiest to find at stores like Ace Hardware or Aubuchon if you are shopping locally rather than online.

If you have a lack of hardware stores but do have a Staples nearby, I can confirm, there's strapping tape there! It's in the mailing section, with a lot of packing tape.
